Last Hearth is a small trading outpost residing on the Steppes, pinned between the Dark Forest and the Maelstrom Mountains. Founded early in the Third Age by Prince Maekar I, son of Bælor during his expeditions into the East. Last Hearth benefits greatly from the lucrative trade between the Dwarven Hinterlands to the East and the Realm of Bælor to the South and West. Valuable ores, gems and various metal works make their way west from the Dwarven Hinterlands to the Realm of Bælor through Maekar’s Pass and down into Last Hearth. Last Hearth has a small population, consistently primarily of Humans and Dwarves, with a few Halfling and Gnome families calling the town home as well.
Within the last year, the economy of Last Hearth has struggled mightily and the population has dropped significantly due to disruptions in trade moving through Maakar’s Pass. The disruptions come as a result of raids and ambushes of trade caravans traversing the switchbacks of Maekar’s Pass. Lord Devon Royce, formerly of the Council of Bælor, has claimed responsibility for the attacks.
Last Hearth has been reduced to a ghost town, with many businesses closing shop, and merchants and artisans making their way to safer areas. The only traffic that passes through Last Hearth are mercenary groups and adventurers looking to escort caravans through the pass.
